Sedation dentistry refers to a dental practice wherein the dentist administers sedative drugs to patients prior to treatment. This puts them in a state of deep relaxation. It also alleviates their fear and anxiety. It helps patients feel comfortable just as they are about to undergo treatment.
However, a dentist must be certified to be able to administer sedative drugs. That means a dentist has to be qualified and trained when it comes to sedation dentistry. A small, safe but effective dose of sedative drugs is used in the process. These could be anything from Diazepam to nitrous oxide and intravenous sedatives, depending on the severity of the patient’s anxiety and the nature of the dental procedure that he or she is about to undergo.
Diazepam is advisable for mild anxiety, as well as straight-forward procedures like dental fillings and simple tooth extraction. Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is ideal for moderate dental fear and anxiety. IV sedation is reserved for complex and invasive procedures like dental implant surgery.
Sedation dentistry is recommended for patients who have crippling dental phobia, or an irrational fear of all things associated with dentistry. It enables them to overcome their phobia temporarily, through artificial means. This helps them receive adequate dental treatment even if their phobia makes it difficult for them to do so.
You’re a candidate for sedation dentistry if you experience headaches, TMJ dysfunction and strong gag reflexes. You can also get sedation if you dislike the smells and sounds in clinics, or if you have a fear of needles.
Sedation dentistry makes it possible for dentists to complete procedures without any interruptions from patients. It helps them work more efficiently and effectively.
