How CEREC Is Different

The process for getting a dental crown is pretty similar at most practices.

The patient will come in, and the dentist will examine the tooth that has been damaged. The dentist will then reshape the tooth, and place a temporary crown on it. The patient’s permanent crown will be ordered from a lab. When it comes back, sometimes weeks later, the patient will return to the dentist’s office to have the crown placed.

During the wait, several problems could arise with the temporary crown. Sometimes it comes loose. Sometimes it breaks or cracks. Those things can leave the reshaped tooth exposed, which is not good.

At Total Dental Care, we have eliminated your need for a second visit in most cases.

After reshaping your affected tooth, we can create your dental crown with our on-site milling machine. The machine takes a ceramic cube and forms it to fit in your mouth.

Your CEREC crown can be placed before you leave the office. No temporary crowns are needed.

How CEREC Is The Same

If you need a dental crown to repair a tooth, the only significant difference between CEREC crowns and other crowns is the time you will save.

CEREC is an abbreviation for ceramic reconstruction. The material is strong, solid, and durable.

It will look like one of your natural teeth when it is bonded in place. It also will provide the same function as a real tooth, so you will be able to bite or chew with your crown, too.

Reasons To Get A Dental Crown

We can’t list every possible reason why you or someone you love may need a dental crown. We can give you some idea of about the possible uses for dental crowns, however.

Here are some of the most common reasons patients have received crowns in our office:

We will start with the example mentioned earlier. A traumatic injury to your mouth or jaw can cause a tooth to chip or break. These injuries can occur because you are struck in the face with something. They can be the result of a fall, or they can occur when you try to bite down on something that is too hard for your teeth.

In any case, you should contact our office as soon as you are able. If you can, find the broken or chipped piece of your tooth to bring with you. You also may want to cover the broken tooth with wax or gauze to prevent accidentally cutting your lips or tongue on the broken tooth.

Poor oral hygiene can result in tooth decay. If this is treated early, you may be able to fix it with a filling. If the decay is more severe, the best option will be to reshape the tooth so the healthy parts can support a dental crown.

Over time, all dental fillings will wear down. If you have a tooth that has been refilled multiple times, that may have taken a toll on your tooth.  To repair your weakened tooth, a dental crown may be a better option.

This is a little different from the process described earlier. If one of your teeth is knocked out, falls out, or is removed, you will be missing the crown and the root of your tooth.

To replace it, we can place a dental implant in your jaw and attach a dental crown to it. The end result is a complete and functional tooth replacement.
