Halloween & Healthy Smile Can Go Together
- October 15, 2019
It’s that time of year when ghosts, ghouls, and goblins come out to play. Creates of the night will step out to collect as much candy as they can.
We hope you and your little “monsters” have happy and fun night. We also hope that you still have your beautiful, healthy smiles when all the candy is gone. That’s why we would like to share a few ideas that could help you and your family stay cavity-free this Halloween.
We also hope you will tell us all about the fun you had when you visit Total Dental Care in Columbia, SC for your next dental cleaning and exam.

Know Your Limits
As you are preparing for the big night of trick-or-treating, your kids have probably talked to you about their costumes. You might even be planning to wear one yourself. Either way, you need to plan ahead to get it just right.
We want you to take a similar approach when it comes to the candy. A few days before the big night, sit down with your kids to discuss what you will do with all those sweets. Working out a plan together can help prevent overindulging, and it might reduce the temptation of having so much candy in your home.
One thing you can do is look for opportunities to give away some of that candy. Organizations, such as Operation Gratitude, accept donations of candy to share with others. Knowing that their candy is a way of showing support for someone else might make it easier for your kids to let go of some of their sweets.
Eat After A Meal
Enjoying some candy is all well and good as long as you don’t overdo it. It isn’t just a treat for you, it’s also a treat for the cavity-causing bacteria in your mouth. The longer those sugary foods stick to your teeth, the more likely bacteria can use them to form plaque and create tooth decay.
By eating this after a meal, you can help reduce that risk. First, you will already be full, so you are less likely to eat too much candy. Second, if you’ve already been eating, your mouth will already have saliva, which helps to rinse away candy particles that can get stuck on and between teeth.
To make it easier to clear away candy residue, we also recommend drinking some water whenever you eat candy or other sweets.
Have Fun & Keep Smiling
We hope that you and your family have a wonderful time this Halloween … and many Halloweens to come. We want to keep your healthy smile looking great, too.
That’s why you also need to remember the basics of good oral care. Brush and floss your teeth every day, and make regular visits to Total Dental Care for routine dental checkups. By working together, we can keep your mouth free from cavities and other oral health problems.
