Emergency Dental Care When You Need it Most

  • February 1, 2015

If you’ve been looking for a dentist in Columbia, SC for very long, you have probably noticed that some of the office hours are not very convenient. How are you supposed to see a dentist if you work an hourly job?

What do you do if there is a dental emergency? What happens when something goes wrong for your smile, but you can’t get ahold of your dentist?

Here at Total Dental Care, we have everything in place to take care of whatever might come up! Let’s spend some time thinking through a dental emergency and what you would need to do!

What Makes an Emergency?

A dental emergency is anything that happens suddenly and has the ability to hugely impact your smile. For example, you might have a toothache that just won’t go away, an injured tooth, and a dental appliance that has broken or fallen out.

In each of these scenarios, there is potential for great harm if we don’t act quickly. That signifies an emergency. If you still aren’t sure, you can always call and ask!

What You Can Do At Home

Let’s begin by discussing what you can do at home to care for these various emergencies. These skills will help you protect your tooth until you can get into the office to see us!

Broken Appliance

A broken appliance refers to a broken crown, a broken bridge, or possible a broken bracket on braces. Never use permanent adhesives on your own dental work, but you can use denture adhesive to put the appliance back in place until you can get into the office to have it repaired.

Knocked Out/Broken Tooth

For a tooth that has been broken or knocked out completely, you must act quickly if we are going to save the tooth! Pick the tooth (or pieces) up by the crown ONLY. Rinse the tooth off with clean water and place it in a cup of milk. If no milk is available, put it in the patient’s cheek to stay moist and clean on your way to the office.

Severe Pain

If you experience severe pain, like a toothache, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers and then call us! A salt-water rinse MIGHT help, but your best bet is to get to the office quickly so that we can evaluate the problem and treat it quickly.

Our Promise to You

Our promise to our patients is that we will be here when you need us. We cannot be available 24 hours each day, but we do our best. If we aren’t available, you will have an opportunity to leave a message for us so that we can get back to you as quickly as possible!

We promise to fit emergency patients into the schedule on the same day they call! No one should have to suffer in pain or discomfort!
